What we learned from Grant Morrison’s Reddit AMA

On Thursday, comics legend Grant Morrison made an appearance on Reddit, a social news aggregation site, in order to promote his new SYFY series, Happy. While there, he answered a number of questions about the show but also dug into some information on comic books, including past and future projects. We sifted through his responses and are now bringing you the most relevant information relating to this wonderful industry.

The Past

Speaking on his famed Batman run, Grant Morrison stated that he regards it with both “affection and pride.” He acknowledged that continuing the story through the New 52 shakeup was difficult but believes they managed to make it work. He also expressed some disappointment that Bruce Wayne’s return happened so quickly, ending the Damian Wayne/Dick Grayson dynamic: “I would have happily kept them together as Batman and Robin for five years before bringing back Bruce at the exact moment everyone had finally given up on his return.” Like many fans out there, he believed Dick Grayson as Batman and Damian Wayne as Robin was a team with a lot of potential.

He also dispensed some advice for reading one of his more confusing books, Final Crisis. He recommends fans “read it like you’d listen to a piece of music and decide whether or not it moves you.” How to read Final Crisis is such a frequently asked fan question that this answer is sure to be relevant to many readers out there.

Alongside this DC information, Morrison also confirmed the theory that Ernst, from his New X-Men run, was created to be a rehabilitated version of Cassandra Nova.

The Future

The most asked about aspect of Morrison’s future was, undoubtedly, the return to Multiversity. Responding to these questions, Morrison confirmed that the sequel to this seminal piece is currently on hold due to his extensive workload. He elaborated slightly on the original intent of the sequel, stating that it was designed as a Jay Garrick story but went back to being a Barry Allen story after a while. Believing the current comic and television market is saturated with Flash stories in general, he left the idea alone. He does state that he will “get to it eventually.”

While the sequel to Multiversity may not be coming anytime soon, Morrison did confirm that the book’s villains, The Gentry, will be returning in his Dark Knights: Metal tie-in, Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt. Besides their return, nothing else about this comic was revealed.

Speaking on his more stable future comic work, Morrison reiterated that his current work for DC only includes the Wonder Woman Earth One books and Arkham Asylum 2. He also stated that his work on the Arkham Asylum sequel has only just begun.

Personal

When asked to make a decision on some of the most fiercely debated arguments in history, Grant Morrison confirmed his preference for Batgirl over Starfire, Veronica over Betty, and cats over dogs.

While this is a brief summary of the interview’s comic book related points, the entire thread digs into more and can be found here if anyone is interested in reading the whole thing.
