Starfire Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Starfire (Princess Koriand’r) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of her appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

With the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe’s continuity was reset. Almost all of Starfire’s history was wiped clean and her earlier appearances were no longer considered in continuity. However, it is quickly implied that some aspects of her relationship with Dick Grayson were preserved, though it is not exactly clear how.

In this era, Starfire immediately forms a connection with Red Hood (Reading Order) and Arsenal (Reading Order). Together, these three form the Outlaws and their adventures play out in the Red Hood and the Outlaws series. Later on, after the conclusion of the Red Hood and the Outlaws series, Starfire goes on to take the lead role in her own solos series. Her adventures in this solo series conclude her appearances in this era and establish her status quo going into the Rebirth era.

See our Starfire Timeline for summaries of each story arc in this reading order.

RHatO = Red Hood and the Outlaws
Red Hood and the Outlaws issues are from the Vol. 1 series.
Teen Titans issues are from the Vol. 4 series.
Superman issues are from the Vol. 3 series.
Starfire issues are from the Vol. 2 series.

Notes
  1. This issue sees Starfire's first encounter with the villain Helspont, who will come back into her life again later. Though the full storyline teased here takes a while to play out, this helps in setting up smaller arcs in the future. However, it is still a very small moment and most fans can feel free to skip it. Fans who read this should read it before Red Hood and the Outlaws #10.
  2. This Secret Origins issue gives a more in depth description of Starfire's history before reaching Earth. Most of this is revealed throughout the series, however a few portions of it are new. Fans can theoretically read this issue any time they please, though doing it around the time indicated mirrors the issue's actual release date and serves as a nice refresher before the last few arcs, which heavily involve Starfire's past.
  3. These two issues of the Superman series continue to set up the Helspont storyline. These are more important than the previous one, as the last few issues of Red Hood and the Outlaws are a near direct continuation of this story. However, it is still easy to understand the story without these issues, so they are not completely essential.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era does not seem to introduce any noticeable continuity changes for Starfire. In fact, her first Rebirth appearance briefly references the setting of her solo series, which brought her appearances in the last era to a close.

Throughout this era, Starfire's most prominent role plays out in the Teen Titans (Reading Order) series. There she, as the oldest member of the team, helps provide a bit of guidance on the team's many adventures. This changes with the advent of the Justice League: No Justice (Reading Order) event, which changed the lineups of many DC teams. These lineup changes help directly set up Starfire's status quo for the next era.

Notes
  1. This issue only features a brief appearance from Starfire. However, this appearance helps reaffirm her past relationship with Dick Grayson (Reading Order).
  2. These issues are mostly about the Super Sons. Starfire only makes a brief appearance alongside the rest of the Teen Titans (Reading Order).

Universe

The Universe era is essentially an extension of the Rebirth era, as it maintains the same continuity. In this way, Starfire's story picks up right where it left off at the conclusion of the Justice League: No Justice (Reading Order) event. Her appearances across this era also reference her New 52 connection to Red Hood (Reading Order) and, in some places, her pre-New 52 connection to the Teen Titans (Reading Order).

Starfire's participation in the Justice League: No Justice event directly leads to her role in the Justice League Odyssey series. This comic has Starfire as a main character for the entire first half of the series. She returns at the comic's conclusion, which then directly leads to her appearance in the Dark Nights: Death Metal (Reading Order). Outside of this, Starfire makes a few brief appearances in comics that mostly just emphasize her connection with other DC characters.

Notes
  1. Only the "Galentine's Day" story from this issue is relevant to this reading order. This story features a small appearance from Starfire that highlights her connection to a few of the other women on the Justice League (Reading Order).
  2. Starfire only makes an extremely brief appearance in this issue. It simply helps to set up her larger appearance in the next issue.
  3. Starfire has a pretty small role in these issues from the Dark Nights: Death Metal (Reading Order) event. They can easily be skipped but may be interesting for readers who want to see her ongoing connection with the members of the Titans (Reading Order) and Teen Titans (Reading Order).
  4. This issue is mostly about the Rebirth Outlaws team-up, consisting of Red Hood (Reading Order), Artemis, and Bizarro. However, it also features previously unseen moments from Starfire's time with the team.
  5. A past version of Starfire appears as a main character in this time-travel storyline. However, this appearance does not have much of an impact on her overall character progression.
  6. Only the "Ex-Position" story from this issue is relevant to this reading order. This is a relatively short story but it highlights Starfire's connection to Nightwing (Reading Order) in a way most other comics of this era do not.
  7. Starfire only appears briefly at this issue's conclusion. However, it helps establish her role in the next era.
