From the Comics: The Wedding of Batman & Catwoman

If you’re familiar with Batman, you’re likely familiar with the flirtatious relationship he and Catwoman share. The pair have maintained an amorous connection ever since the very first issue of Batman, way back in 1940. Today we’re taking a look at recent comic book events that have pushed their romance further than it has ever gone before.

Batman’s father encourages him to stop his crusade

Recently, a number of events have taken place that have made Batman reconsider his entire outlook on life. The first occurred when Batman was teleported to another dimension, where his father became Batman instead of himself. While there, his father encouraged him to abandon the mantle of Batman because it leads to a life filled with sadness and solitude. Specifically, his father told him to “find happiness,” a concept which has thus far eluded the Dark Knight.

Upon his return, Batman admitted that his is unhappy with his life. A fellow hero, named Gotham Girl, advised him to look past his fears and begin his pursuit of happiness. Not long after this, Batman proposed to Catwoman (aka Selina Kyle) and she said yes.

Batman assures his son that he is trying to find happiness

With the wedding in the future, the couple moved on to a new stage in their relationship. They told each other stories from their past, helped each other with problems, and even went on a double date with Superman and Lois Lane.

However, things became complicated in the days before the wedding. A time traveling superhero, Booster Gold, tried to give Batman a gift by showing him how bad life would be if his parents had never been shot. In this alternate timeline, the world was in chaos but Bruce Wayne was happy. Booster left the timeline depressed about what he witnessed, yet decided to still share the distressing information with Batman and Catwoman. In addition, Catwoman got in a fight with Joker, who tells her that Batman can’t be Batman if he is happy.

When the day of the wedding finally came around, Catwoman brought her friend, Holly, to be a witness. Holly is happy for Catwoman but admits that she is surprised Batman is going along with this, since he seems to need depression to fuel his crusade against crime. This statement and the events of the previous few days sit with Catwoman. When the wedding finally takes place, Selina Kyle is nowhere to be found. In a note she leaves Batman, she explains why. Among other things she claims that he is “an engine that turns pain into hope” and states that she has to sacrifice him because she loves him.

Bane’s involvement is revealed

Then, in a secret room beneath Arkham Asylum, Holly approaches Bane and lets him know that his plan worked. Bane is surrounding by numerous people whose actions and words contributed to both the proposal and Catwoman’s departure; including Gotham Girl, the alternate version of Batman’s father, Booster Gold’s time-traveling assistant, and Joker. It turns out that all of this was part of Bane’s plan to fill Batman with hope and then completely break his spirit.

As of right now, we know very little about how Bane was able to accomplish such an elaborate scheme or what his goals are from this point onward. However, Tom King, the writer behind all of these stories, has confirmed that the wedding issue is only the halfway point in the story he is currently telling. Hopefully, the second half of this story will help piece together the missing information and maybe even allow Batman to recover from the depression Catwoman’s departure caused him.

  • “Today we’re taking a look at recent comic book events that have pushed their romance further than it has ever gone before.” Did the writer even research Batman and Catwoman’s history before writing this? Do they realize that Huntress (Helena Wayne) is the daughter of who else?, but Batman and Catwoman of Earth 2. The Bronze age of comics. So, really this is not taking Batman and Catwoman’s romance the furthest it has ever gone before.
