“Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity” is DC’s latest Psychological Thriller Comic

Yesterday, DC Comics announced Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity, a new comic series for their Black Label imprint. The series will be written by Kami Garcia, and illustrated by Mike Mayhew and Mico Suayan. Right now, this comic is set to take place over nine issues and is set to release in October.

The story here will take place in an alternate version of the mainstream DC Universe, where Harley Quinn is still a psychiatrist and has yet to meet the Joker. Her goal in this comic is to find a killer, a mission that forces her to confront some of her inner demons. Meanwhile, the Joker will be portrayed more like a “real person” who “kills because he wants to, not because he suffers from delusions.” Writer Kami Garcia drew comparisons between this version of the Joker and John Wayne Gacy or Ted Bundy.

In Gotham City, where heinous acts of violence are a daily occurrence, the GCPD relies on Harley Quinn, a young forensic psychiatrist and profiler, to consult on their toughest cases. But Harley is haunted by one case in particular—when she found herself at the center of a horrifying crime scene the night she discovered the body of her roommate, left with the signature of a notorious serial killer—the Joker.

When a series of gruesome displays of murder appear throughout the city, the past and present collide as Harley’s obsession with finding the depraved psychopath responsible leads her down a dangerous path. She must decide how far she is willing to go, and what lines she is willing to cross to solve these cases once and for all.

As part of DC’s Black Label imprint, Criminal Sanity will be standalone and out-of-continuity, similar to comics like Batman: Damned or Batman: Last Knight on Earth. The first issue in this series will release on October 2, 2019 and will be releasing monthly from that point.
