Quick Breakdown of NEW info about Marvel’s Next Phase

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced a host of new information about their post-Avengers: Endgame phase of films and MCU-related television shows. To simplify this influx of facts and speculation, we’ve condensed it into an easy to understand list of vital info. Keep in mind, Marvel did not discuss every one of their properties at Comic-Con so this timeline of media should not be considered final.

Black Widow

Release Date: May 1, 2020

This film will star Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, O.T. Fagbenle, and Florence Pugh and is directed by Cate Shortland.

Released plot details have Natasha confronting her past and dealing with events that took place in Budapest on a previous mission. Taskmaster is set to be the film’s villain.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Release Date: Fall 2020

This Disney+ streaming series will star Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan as Bucky.

Plot details are sparse about this show and it isn’t exactly clear what it will be about. However, events at Comic Con indicate that Baron Zemo will be returning as the show’s villain.

The Eternals

Release Date: November 6, 2020

This film will star Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, and Don Lee and is directed by Chloé Zhao.

Not much is known about the plot of this movie but interviews indicate it may see the Eternals protecting “humankind from the Deviants” . Kevin Feige also described the movie as “full on Jack Kirby,” meaning it will likely involve far-out concepts and trippy visuals.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Release Date: February 12, 2021

This film will star Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Tony Leung and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.

Like the other films in this list, not much is known about what will be happening in this movie. Presumably, it will involve Shang-Chi fighting against the Ten Rings terrorist group, the organization that kidnapped Iron Man all the way back in the first Iron Man movie.

WandaVision

Release Date: Spring 2021

This Disney+ steaming series will star Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as Wanda and Vision.

Marvel described this show as a “mega event series” and also hinted at some topics it will tackle. Since the show takes place after Avengers: Endgame it will, presumably, have to explain Vision’s revival. The series will feature an adult Monica Rambeau, last seen as a child in Captain Marvel, which is significant because Monica Rambeau becomes a superhero in the comics. Plus, Comic Con confirmed that the series will directly tie-in to the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In general, it seems like Marvel will be using this show to push the MCU forward even further.

Loki

Release Date: Spring 2021

This Disney+ streaming series will see Tom Hiddleston reprise his role as Loki.

Marvel has confirmed that this show will follow the time-displaced Loki who was briefly seen in Avengers: Endgame. This Loki has an Infinity Stone and has not gone through any character development since the conclusion of the original Avengers film.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness

Release Date: May 7, 2021

This film will star Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff. It will be directed by Scott Derrickson.

The titular “Multiverse of Madness” will, presumably, be the central focus of this film. Besides this, we know that the movie will have some sort of connection to the Disney+ WandaVision series. It also has been confirmed that the movie will be more frightening than typical Marvel movies and may even dip into horror in some places.

What If…?

Release Date: Summer 2021

This animated Disney+ series will have a wide variety of MCU stars return to voice their roles. It will also star Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher.

The premise of this show seems to be extremely similar to the premise of the comic of the same name. This, likely, means it will be looking at moments from the MCU’s history and will ask “what if?” something had gone differently.

Hawkeye

Release Date: Fall 2021

This Disney+ steaming series will see Jeremy Renner reprise his role as Hawkeye.

The biggest announcement regarding this show is that it will involve Kate Bishop in some way. Given her role in the comics and some of Jeremy Renner’s interviews, it seems that the series may see Hawkeye training Kate as his replacement. Kevin Feige also confirmed that the series will, partially, explain the time Hawkeye spent as a rogue agent in Avengers: Endgame.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Release Date: November 5, 2021

This film will star Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman, with Taika Waititi returning as director.

The movie will be reintroducing Jane Foster to the MCU as a female version of Thor. This switch up is heavily inspired by recent Thor comics and, thus, may be accompanied by some serious problems from Thor. In addition, Tessa Thompson has confirmed that the film will involve Valkyrie, Asgard’s new ruler, attempting to “find her queen”.

Other Films

While they were not specifically discussed, Marvel also acknowledged that there are more movies coming, specifically Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Kevin Feige also hinted that movies involving the Fantastic Four and the X-Men are on the way.

However, the biggest reveal here is that Mahershala Ali will be staring as Blade in a new Blade movie.
