Throne of Glass Reading Order

The Throne of Glass series is relatively straightforward. All you have to do to read it is start with the prequel novel, which is a collection of short stories, before moving on to the seven novels that make up the main series. This means starting with The Assassin’s Blade, continuing with Throne of Glass and its subsequent books, and, finally, ending with Kingdom of Ash. By following each book in order, you will understand the entire Throne of Glass narrative.

The only complication comes if you read the short stories separately. The Assassin’s Blade packages together all of the short stories together in one easy to read package, so we recommend reading the short stories though this book. However, if you are reading them individually, you need to read them in the order listed below, starting with The Assassin and the Pirate Lord and ending with The Assassin and the Empire. Make sure to read them in order, as they tell a cohesive story that won’t make sense out of order.

Throne of Glass Reading Order FAQ

Do I Have to Read "The Assassin's Blade" Before "Throne of Glass"?

Technically, The Assassin's Blade is not listed as one of the main Throne of Glass books. In addition, Throne of Glass generally sums up the main events from The Assassin's Blade. So, you could start the series without reading The Assassin's Blade first.

However, we highly recommend reading it before starting the rest of the series. This is because events in The Assassin's Blade are referenced throughout many of the other books. In order to fully understand the impact of these references, it is best to read The Assassin's Blade first and foremost.

Do You Have to Read the Throne of Glass Books in Order?

Yes! Reading any of the books out of order will spoil significant portions of earlier books.

Is Throne of Glass Connected to Other Sarah J. Maas Books?

This is a complicated question. However, put simply, the answer is yes. The Throne of Glass series has connections to books in the Crescent City and the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. These connections imply that all of these books exist within some kind of multiverse.

However, these connections are pretty vague and not very direct. So, you can absolutely read any series before or after the others and still completely understand what is going on.

Will There Be More Throne of Glass Books?

Right now, it doesn't look like anything more is coming for Throne of Glass. On her website, Sarah J. Maas states that she does "not have any plans to write more Throne of Glass books". While it is possible she may change her mind, it seems unlikely to hold out hope.
