Avengers/Defenders War Reading Order

Overview

The Avengers/Defenders War is a clash between the Avengers and Defenders resulting from the schemes of both teams' enemies. These schemes come from Dormammu and Loki, who serve as the event's villains.

The event itself is a straightforward crossover between the Avengers and Defenders comic series. It starts in Avengers #115, continues in Defenders #8, and alternates between these two titles for the duration of the event.

*Only the final chapter of these issues is relevant to the Avengers/Defenders War.

**The first half of this issue focuses on some of the fallout from the Avenger/Defenders War. The rest of the issue focuses on the next Defenders story arc.

Before Reading

As a direct crossover between the Avengers and Defenders series, this event takes place immediately after earlier issues from both comics. This means that the storylines from Avengers #114, collected in Marvel Masterworks: Avengers Vol. 12 (Review), and Defenders #7, collected in Marvel Masterworks: Defenders Vol. 2 (Review), are somewhat of a prelude to this event.

However, the event mostly stands on its own, as references to earlier issues of Avengers or Defenders are often explained by dialogue or narration.

After Reading

The Avenger/Defenders War does not really have a direct sequel. Instead, the separate stories of the Avengers and Defenders are simply continued in their respective comics. The Avengers' adventures are continued in Avengers #119, collected in Marvel Masterworks: Avengers Vol. 12 (Review), and the Defenders' adventures are continued in Defenders #12, collected in Marvel Masterworks: Defenders Vol. 2 (Review).
