Review: Justice League- War (Review)

Quick Summary

Pros: The entire movie is dramatic and exciting. The comedy is well-written and fits well into the adventure. The characters are almost all great, especially Shazam and Cyborg. The animation suits the film.

Cons: Wonder Woman’s character isn’t written that well. The conclusion is a bit of a deus ex machina.

Overall: This is a solid origin story for the Justice League and an entertaining movie overall. It has intense flashes of action, brief interjections of comedy, and showcases most characters in a way that makes the viewer want to see more from them. In addition, the animation works well in complementing all of this. There are some problems that prevent it from being a great film but not enough to prevent it from being a good one. Overall, fans looking for a movie that provides a modern look at the Justice League’s origin should consider watching this.

Quick Review

Justice League: War is an optimistic start to a new series of DC animated films. It details the modern formation of the Justice League by providing a brief exploration into each of their characters. This allows for some funny moments, mostly from Green Lantern and Shazam, and some wholesome moments as well, mostly from Green Lantern and Cyborg. Though these introductions are pretty brief, it helps viewers get a general picture for who these characters are and how they fit together on this team.

The entire movie also works as an entertaining showcase of action. The League’s formation comes at the appearance of one of the most powerful villains in the universe. The resulting battle is intense and the snappy animation helps convey this intensity. All of this action pairs well with the more emotional character moments and helps produce a more captivating narrative.

My only major problems with Justice League: War do not have a huge impact on its appeal. I felt like Wonder Woman could have been written better, as she comes across as a warmonger ready to jump into action before asking a single question. In addition, the film’s conclusion feels like a slight deus ex machina in the way it wraps everything up at the very end. These problems don’t completely damage the film as a whole but do prevent it from being as good as it could have been.

Continuity

Justice League: War takes place sometime after Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (Review).

The conclusion of this movie leads directly into Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.
