Theories run wild as Spider-Man fans react to Marvel’s cryptic Tweet

On Sunday, June 16th, the Marvel Entertainment Twitter account posted a cryptic image of a spider weaving the number “4” into its web. Immediately after this tweet was released, fan speculation went wild.

The most popular theory is that Marvel will be rebooting the old Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film series. This series ended as a trilogy, but a fourth installment was in the works before eventually being cancelled. Recently, admiration for this film series has been high online and, thus, speculation for anything related has been high as well.

However, given the positive critical reaction and financial success of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, this theory seems rather unlikely. In addition, Marvel Entertainment’s tweet specifically included the #MarvelComics hashtag in two separate areas, casting doubt on this tease being anything film related.

Instead, it seems more likely that this is a tease for a new comic book series. Some fans think it may be hinting at Spider-Man joining the Fantastic Four in the comics, which he has a history of doing. Other fans think that the “four” may be part of a countdown to some sort of new series and that we should expect a “three” tweet soon.

The last theory, and our personal favorite, is a blend between the reboot theory and the comic theory. This suggests that the cryptic tweet is implying the previously canceled Spider-Man 4 film will finally be released, albeit in comic book form. This has happened many times in the world of comic books so there is definitely precedent for something like this; the screenplay for a sequel to The Dark Crystal was released as a comic, and scrapped episodes of the Invader Zim series made their way to the world of comics as well. If this ends up being true, fans will finally get another chance to see Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man take on his great responsibility once more.
