Upcoming “DIE” Oversized Hardcover Collects the Entire Comic Series, Hints at a Sequel

Die, written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Stephanie Hans, is an amazing comic about a group of people playing a tabletop RPG, with a Jumanji-style twist. The series reached its conclusion last year with the publication of Die #20. Previously, the entire series was collected over the course of four trade paperbacks, starting with Die Vol. 1: Fantasy Heartbreaker (Review) and ending with Die Vol. 4: Bleed. Now, a new oversized hardcover is set to change things.

Die, Book 1 is currently set for release on November 8, 2022. The volume is solicited as an oversized hardcover that will collect issues #1-20 of the series. The contents allow fans to have the entire comic run in a single book while the oversized format can offer a better way to appreciate Stephanie Hans’ art. Together, these factors make the upcoming book sound like the perfect way for new fans to jump into the series or for old fans to recollect it all.

The other interesting point to be gleaned from this new solicitation comes from its name. Die, Book 1 is listed as being “Book 1” despite the fact that the series is over. In the past, Image Comics has published oversized hardcovers for ongoing comics as “Book 1” or “Book 2”, such as Saga Book 1 and Saga Book 2. Meanwhile, deluxe hardcovers for completed comics are simply published with the same name as the series, such as Skyward or Middlewest. This seems to indicate that more is coming for the Die comic series. In past interviews, Kieron Gillen has stated that “there certainly is room to return to Die” and has expressed hope for exploring more of the world in the future. So, we’re hopeful this solicitation indicates more comics are on the way in the future.

Despite this evidence, the “Book 1” listing could also simply be a mistake, as nothing has truly been confirmed. Either way though, the new volume looks like a solid new collection for fans of the series.
