Despicable Me & Minions Movie Watching Order

This watching order is designed to give an outline of Despicable Me movie franchise. It explains in what order to watch the Despicable Me and the Minions movies.

To do this, we’ve created two separate watching orders. The first looks at the movies in the order they were released. The second looks at the movies in timeline order (which puts the prequels earlier in the list).

Despicable Me Release Order Watching Order

The Despicable Me series starts with the Despicable Me movies. Despicable Me introduces the main characters, specifically Gru and the Minions. Next, Despicable Me 2 directly continues the story.

At this point, the first prequel movie was released. Minions mostly focuses on the Minions, rather than Gru. However, the end of the movie connects back to Gru and explains his early connection to the Minions.

Next, Despicable Me 3 returns to the present. It directly continues builds on the conclusion of Despicable Me 2 and continues the storyline for most characters.

Then, another prequel was released. Minions: The Rise of Gru focuses on Gru’s past. It takes place a few years after the conclusion of Minions but many years before the first Despicable Me movie.

Despicable Me Timeline Order Watching Order

Watching the Despicable Me and Minions movies in timeline order is relatively easy. All you have to do is watch the Minions movies first and then watch the Despicable Me movies.

Minions introduces the background of the Minions and shows how they met Gru. Then, Minions: The Rise of Gru shows their later adventures together.

Long after these two films, the Despicable Me movies take place. These proceed in a straightforward way, going from Despicable Me, to Despicable Me 2, to Despicable Me 3.
