Halloween Franchise Timeline

The Halloween franchise is split into several different series. Each of these series ignores most or all of what happens in the other series. So, there is not a singular timeline for the entire franchise but, instead, multiple branching timelines. Because of this, this watching order is split into several different sections based on the specific timeline or series being explored.

Original Halloween Series

The first series of Halloween films is mostly straightforward. It starts with Halloween. Then Halloween II picks up right where Halloween left off. After this, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers takes place 10 years later. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers directly continues the story from that point. Finally, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers takes place a few years after the events of Halloween 5. While there are some gaps in the timeline, these films all proceed with a pretty direct narrative.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is almost completely unrelated. Though it is technically the third Halloween film, it does not follow the same story at all. All that it does is make a brief reference to the fact that the first Halloween film exists.

H20

The two films in this series take place 20 years after the events of Halloween and Halloween II. They don't directly state that the events of the other Halloween films are out of continuity. However, they do not reference them at all.

Halloween H20 takes place first. Then, Halloween: Resurrection immediately follows up on the events of this film.

Halloween Remake

The next Halloween films are completely isolated. Halloween (2007) is a remake of Halloween (1978) but is meant to stand on its own. So, viewers jumping in here do not have to have seen the original Halloween. The Halloween 2007 remake is directly followed by the events of Halloween II (2009).

H40 Trilogy

The H40 Trilogy is another reboot. This trilogy wipes away the history of every film except the original Halloween (1978).

These films are set about 40 years after the events of the original film. The series starts with Halloween (2018), continues with Halloween Kills, and concludes with Halloween Ends. Each of these films contains a number of references to the original Halloween so watching that film first is recommended.
