The Matrix Watching Order
This watching order is designed to give an outline of The Matrix movie franchise. It explains what order to watch the movies and looks at any connections between them.
The Matrix
The Matrix film franchise starts with The Matrix (1999). This film gets the entire franchise going while also introducing the lore and narrative that propel it forward.
The entire franchise proceeds in a relatively straightforward manner. It starts with The Matrix (1999), continues with The Matrix Reloaded (2003), continues again with The Matrix Revolutions (2003), and is set to continue again with The Matrix Resurrections (2021) (soon to be available on HBO Max). All of these films generally follow the same cast of characters as epic events unfold within and outside of the Matrix itself.
The only film outside of the main Matrix film line is The Animatrix (2003). This is a compilation of short films that further plot points from or expand the world of The Matrix. These are not necessarily essential to viewing this film series but may be of interest to fans.
