Red Hood (Jason Todd) Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Red Hood (Jason Todd) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. In this new continuity, almost every character’s history was wiped clean and they were reintroduced to the DC Universe. However, Red Hood was relatively unaffected by this reset. His death, his rebirth, his crusade against Batman, and his tense relationship with the Bat-family are all preserved. The exact details behind his resurrection and what he did immediately after being resurrected appear to be the only major changes between this era and the last.

Red Hood’s adventures mostly play out through his solo series, Red Hood and the Outlaws. This comic puts him in contact with Starfire (Reading Order) and Roy Harper (Reading Order) and the trio form a superhero team together. Outside of this, Red Hood continues to have many dealings with the Bat-family. His relationship with them changes over time, specifically through his appearances in the Batman Incorporated, Batman, and Batman and Robin comics. Finally, Jason’s role at the conclusion of the Red Hood/Arsenal series sets up the status quo for his Rebirth era appearances.

Notes
  1. Jason Todd only has a supporting role in most issues of the Batman Incorporated series.
  2. These issues detail a story arc mostly focused on Robin (Reading Order). However, they also look at Jason's relationship with Damian.
  3. Only the "Tomorrow" story from this issue is relevant to this reading order. This story is a flashback that simply shows a brief moment of inspiration from Jason's past.
  4. Red Hood's appearance in this issue, most likely, takes place sometime in the middle of Red Hood and the Outlaws #14.
  5. One of the storylines running through the Batman Eternal and Batman & Robin Eternal series is centered around Red Hood. It has little impact on his main storyline but shows his continued involvement in the Bat-family. Note: The last issue of Batman & Robin Eternal contains a jump forward in time that spoils something from Batman #50.
  6. This issue is mostly about Superman (Reading Order) and Batman. However, it also sees contributions toward Batman's efforts from Red Hood and Batgirl (Reading Order).
  7. This issue is mostly about Supergirl (Reading Order). However, Red Hood has a supporting role in it that somewhat continues their interactions from Batman/Superman Annual #1.
  8. This arc centers around the entire Bat-family. It also serves as an emotional successor to the hurt feelings present at the conclusion of the Death of the Family (Reading Order) event.
  9. These issues conclude the Batman: Endgame (Reading Order) event and feature small appearances from Red Hood.
  10. Red Hood's appearance in this story arc is relatively small and has no impact on his main storyline.
  11. This issue only features a few brief appearances from Red Hood. However, it depicts a reunion that changes things within the Bat-family.
  12. This arc mostly focuses on other characters and features Red Hood in a supporting role.

Rebirth

Besides a general change in his situation, explained at the beginning of the Red Hood and the Outlaws Rebirth series, this era introduces little to no continuity changes for Jason Todd.

Red Hood's adventures in this era are mostly told through the Red Hood and the Outlaws series. The biggest difference between this series and the one before it is that it stars different characters, Bizarro and Artemis instead of Starfire (Reading Order) and Roy Harper (Reading Order). Alongside these main adventures, Red Hood also continues his involvement with the Bat-family through small roles in the Batman and Detective Comics series. Near the end of this era, Red Hood and the Outlaws #25 introduces a status quo change that sets the tone for the next era.

  3. Red Hood only has a small role in these action-focused issues but it may still be worthwhile for readers who want to see him fight alongside the Bat-family.
  4. This issue brings the Bat-family together to discuss a serious matter. Though it only focuses on Red Hood for a few pages, these pages allow him to express some opinions that fans may find interesting.
