Batman Beyond (Terry McGinnis) Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Batman Beyond (Terry McGinnis) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

In this era, Batman Beyond (Terry McGinnis) is reintroduced to the DC Comics Universe. This version of Terry seems to share much of his history with the version of Terry from the Batman Beyond TV show, though the exact extent of their shared history is unclear.

Terry McGinnis first appears in the Futures End (Reading Order) series. This series, set in a dystopian version of the DC Universe’s future, serves as an entry point for Batman Beyond to enter the mainstream DC Universe. The conclusion of Futures End serves as the set-up for a new Batman Beyond series. Though this series primarily focuses on a new version of Batman Beyond, flashbacks and subplots feature appearances from Terry McGinnis, mostly by setting up his role in the next era.

Rebirth

Terry's story in this era picks up immediately where it left off in the previous era. In addition to this, elements from the Batman Beyond animated series are incorporated into the narrative, confirming that what happened in the show is cannon in this comic.

In this era, Terry exclusively appears in the Batman Beyond series. Here, he serves as Neo-Gotham's Batman and the star of the series. Terry doesn't have any appearances outside of this comic.

Universe

At this point in the Batman Beyond series, there appears to be a subtle continuity change. The New 52 and Rebirth Batman Beyond comics dealt with a world suffering from the dystopian future seen in the Futures End (Reading Order) event. However, from this point onward, the dystopian elements are almost entirely removed and the Futures End event is not mentioned. It is unclear what brought about this change but it does occur around the same time as the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event, which had some subtle impacts on continuity. However, besides this change, the storyline here directly continues the storyline from the previous era.

Terry's role in this era is essentially the same as it was in the previous era. He still stars in the Batman Beyond series and has no significant appearances outside of it.
