Batman/Superman Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring the Batman/Superman team-up throughout DC Comics. It does not encompass every one of their appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

With the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe’s continuity was reset. This reset essentially reset the friendship between Batman and Superman, making them acquaintances/coworkers rather than best friends. However, their friendship began to redevelop through the Batman/Superman series. Their friendship would later go on to play a role in large events like Superman: Doomed (Reading Order) and Superman: The Final Days of Superman (Review).

Notes
  1. Batman appears in every "main event" issue of "Superman: Doomed" (Reading Order) leading up to Batman/Superman #11. After this, his appearances in the event are a bit more sporadic.
  2. This story happens in an alternate future so it can be skipped if necessary.
  3. Batman only appears in the Batman/Superman issues and the final three issues of "The Final Days of Superman" (Reading Order). However, other issues help further explain what is going on in this crossover event.
  4. Batman/Superman #33-24 and Annual #3 cannot be purchased as individual issues. They were created specifically for inclusion in collected editions.
  5. These issues take place years before the "The Final Days of Superman" (Reading Order) event so they don't really fit in any specific place on this reading order. Because of this, we have simply placed them here in order to match with their publication date.

Rebirth

The Batman/Superman series does not continue into the Rebirth era. However, the Trinity (Reading Order) series essentially replaces both the Batman/Superman and the Superman/Wonder Woman (Reading Order) comics. This series focuses on the friendship between Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, rather than on any individual relationship.

ComicBookWire's "Trinity Reading Order" can be found here.
