General Zod (Dru-Zod) Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring General Zod (Dru-Zod) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances, but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

With the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe’s continuity was reset. Almost all of General Zod’s history was wiped clean and his earlier appearances were no longer considered in continuity.

Zod was then reintroduced about halfway through the New 52 era. His first few appearances were confined to flashbacks from before the planet Krypton’s destruction. These explain who he is and detail the situation that led to him surviving the death of the planet. Then, he has a significant appearance across an entire story arc from the Superman/Wonder Woman (Reading Order) series. These issues essentially depict his reintroduction to the modern DC Universe.

Notes
  1. Like Action Comics #23 and Action Comics #23.2, this issue is a flashback to Zod's time on Krypton that builds on his history. However, Zod's appearance here is generally brief and does not contribute much to his overall progression in this era.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era alters General Zod's history but the extent of these alterations are unclear. The biggest change comes from the fact that Zod's connection to Faora, a critical piece of his personality in the previous era, seems to have been dropped entirely. In addition, the entirety of his New 52 adventures essentially go unmentioned, suggesting but not confirming that they may have been erased from history altogether.

In this era, Zod's storyline follows a more clear and direct path. He is reintroduced through the Suicide Squad series, which explains how he returned to the world. His role in the Suicide Squad directly leads to his role in Action Comics, which directly leads to his role in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. His overarching narrative remains relatively consistent throughout these comics and generally revolves around a plan he develops throughout each of them.

  1. These Suicide Squad issues only feature brief appearances from General Zod. However, these appearances help explain what is happening to him between his other, more major appearances.
