Batwing (Luke Fox) Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Batwing (Luke Fox) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. New 52

The Luke Fox version of Batwing is introduced about halfway through the New 52 era. He does not appear before this era and, thus, has no appearances in earlier eras.

Luke Fox first appears in the Batwing series. This series introduces him, explores his character, and details his first exploits as Batwing. After this series concluded, Batwing went on to play a major role in a subplot running through several issues of the Batman Eternal series. Both of these comics focus on Luke Fox’s role as Batwing while also highlighting some elements of his personal life. Finally, Batwing appeared in the Batgirl series. His role in Batgirl is smaller and focuses less on his position as Batwing but does help establish a few things that will become relevant in the Rebirth era.

Batgirl issues are from the Vol. 4 series

Notes
  1. This issue is a tie-in to the larger Futures End (Review) (Reading Order) event. Technically it takes place in a alternate version of the DC Universe's future, however, it connects to the Batwing series and even helps give it a more significant conclusion.
  2. These issues depict the events leading up to the finale for the entire Batman Eternal series. Batwing appears in these issues but his role in them is far smaller than it was in other issues from the series. He has a moderate role in the final issue, #52, that appears to setup a future storyline, yet his role in this storyline never actually materializes.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to Rebirth era does not appear to significantly alter any aspect of Batwing's history. Instead, his story picks up right where it left off in the Batgirl series.

In this era, Batwing's primary role is within the Detective Comics series. Within this comic, he joins several other Gotham City heroes on the Gotham Knights team-up. Luke Fox isn't exactly one of the central members of this team, as none of the Detective Comics story arcs specifically focus on Luke as an individual, but he does end up playing a moderate role in many of the team's adventures.

Notes
  1. Azrael and the other members of the Gotham Knights team-up have a moderate role in this issue. However, the issue is mostly about Red Hood (Reading Order), Bizarro, and Artemis.

Universe

The transition from the Rebirth to the Universe era does not appear to significantly alter any aspect of Batwing's history. In fact, it pulls in elements of his character's history from throughout his history, like his relationship with his immediate family or his relationship with Batgirl (Reading Order).

Luke Fox reappears in the middle of The Joker War (Reading Order) event. He does not have a large role in this event but it helps set up a larger role for Luke and the rest of the Fox family. Immediately after this, he appears in the Batgirl series as a part of the "collateral damage" from the Joker War.
