Mera New 52 Reading Order

This reading order is designed to show exactly how to read the Mera New 52 comics. It will walk you through an explanation of how to read Mera comics in this era and then provide you with a list of Mera New 52 comics. By the end of this article, you’ll be ready to read Mera comics with no problem at all.

Mera New 52 Reading Order

With the start of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. This effectively wiped away almost all of Mera’s history. At the start of this era, she is still a hero with some ties to Atlantis but those ties haven’t been fully explored yet. In addition, the retcons that took place through the Brightest Day series appear to remain in continuity. Finally, her relationship with Aquaman (Reading Order) still exists but has significantly regressed, to the point where it seems the relationship is relatively new.

Mera starts to reestablish her presence as a hero through the Aquaman series. In this, the Geoff Johns Aquaman run (Reading Order) reintroduces audiences to Mera and starts to explore her connection to Atlantis and Xebel. This is most prominently expanded upon in Aquaman Vol. 4: Death of a King (Review), which is the climax of the entire run.

After Geoff Johns’s Aquaman run, other comics continue to explore ideas and concepts that were introduced in that run. Aquaman #26 to Aquaman #40 mostly focus on Aquaman but still feature Mera as a supporting character. Later on, Aquaman #41-48 shuffles things around for all of the characters, particularly Mera, and expands on her family (though future comics mostly ignore this storyline). In general, these issues have less lasting consequences for Mera than the issues that came before and the issues that come after.

Finally, Aquaman #49-52 present a relatively light adventure that wraps up most things that have happened in this era. At the same time, the writer of these issues, Dan Abnett, starts setting up things for the next era, as he writes the bulk of Mera’s adventures in the Rebirth era. Readers following along for this whole journey should not miss these final few issues and even new readers can feel free to jump in around this point, as doing so will prepare them for the Rebirth Mera adventures (Reading Order).

Notes

  1. Mera's role in this series does not contribute much to the development of her individual character and can easily be skipped.
  2. Without spoiling what happens in this story arc, it is hard to explain why these issues are non-essential to Mera's character. However, reading them helps allow the story arc as a whole to make more sense.

Mera New 52 Reading Order FAQ

What to Read Before New 52 Mera Comics

The New 52 era offers a nearly complete restart for Mera. So, you don't really need to read anything specific before reading her New 52 adventures. However, reading the Brightest Day event can be helpful, as some of the continuity changes introduced there are used in this era.

What to Read After New 52 Mera Comics

Mera's story from the New 52 era directly continues in the Rebirth era (Reading Order). This starts with a surprising twist in the DC Universe: Rebirth (Review) special issue and continues in the Rebirth Aquaman series, which starts with Aquaman Vol. 1: The Drowning (Review). For more details about exactly what Aquaman comics to read, see our Mera Rebirth Reading Order.

Where Is a Good Starting Point for New 52 Mera Comics?

The best place to start reading New 52 Mera is at the beginning. Simply start with Aquaman #1 and work your way down through this reading order. Working through the reading order in this way works best because Mera's appearances build on each other, with each storyline further developing things that happened earlier.

If you don't want to start all the way at the beginning, you can potentially start with Aquaman #49-52, collected in Aquaman Vol. 8: Out of Darkness (Review). While this does effectively skip most of the comics in the New 52 era, it does a fantastic job of wrapping things up and preparing readers for the next era.

Is Mera Part of the Justice League in the New 52 Era?

No, Mera has very few ties to the Justice League (Reading Order) in this era. She works alongside them in the Throne of Atlantis (Reading Order) event but does little with them outside of this.

Are New 52 Mera Comics a Separate Continuity?

Yes and no. The beginning of the New 52 reset the DC Universe. So, most of the storylines in this era, including Mera's, are the start of a brand-new continuity. However, this is still the main DC Universe. So, it is essentially a fresh start in the same world.
