Mera Rebirth Reading Order

The jump from New 52 (Reading Order) to Rebirth doesn’t change much for Mera. There are no continuity alterations between the two eras. In fact, Mera’s adventures in the Rebirth era immediately pick up on the last Aquaman story arc from the New 52 era, Aquaman: Out of Darkness (Review). So, at least reading the end of the New 52 era can help things make sense in the Rebirth era.

Mera’s adventures in this era start in DC Universe: Rebirth #1, where fans get a sneak peek at what is coming for her and Aquaman (Reading Order). From there, the bulk of her appearances are in the Aquaman series. This series, written by Dan Abnett, tells a straightforward story about Mera and Aquaman working toward preserving the balance between Atlantis and the surface world while simultaneously facing off against a serious threat. Mera has a prominent role in most of the series but leaves it for a while to star in her own series, Mera: Queen of Atlantis, that directly ties into what is happening in Aquaman and is also written by Dan Abnett. Then, all of these storylines come to a head in the Aquaman/Suicide Squad: Sink Atlantis (Reading Order) crossover event.

Outside of all of this, Mera makes several appearances alongside the Justice League (Reading Order). The most significant of these is in Justice League #24, which is essentially centered around Mera. She is an official member of the team for the second half of this era.

Notes

  1. This issue only briefly features Mera and mostly focuses on the rest of the Justice League (Reading Order).
  2. Most of these issues feature Mera in a way that impacts her potential future.
  3. These issues only briefly feature Mera but do explain what she was doing during the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event. However, they don't really fit well into Mera's continuity. This is because the Aquaman series and her solo miniseries have her on non-stop adventures, leaving no time for the events of these comics to take place. However, the end of Metal has a direct impact on the end of Aquaman #38 and the other issues marked here take place before Metal. So, this makes for some messy continuity. In the end, we recommend reading these minor Mera appearances whenever you want as long as you read the end of Metal before the end of the Aquaman: Kingslayer (Review) arc.

Mera Rebirth Reading Order FAQ

What to Read Before Rebirth Mera Comics

Mera's Rebirth adventures take place immediately after her New 52 adventures (you can see our Mera New 52 Reading Order here). You can read all of these adventures by following along with our Aquaman New 52 Reading Order. You can also read the most relevant comics in the Aquaman: Out of Darkness (Review) story arc, the last Aquaman arc of the New 52 era. This final arc is written by Dan Abnett, who wrote most of her Rebirth adventures, and helps directly set up the Rebirth era.

What to Read After New 52 Mera Comics

After the Rebirth era, Mera's story continues in the New Justice era. For Mera, this starts with the Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth (Reading Order) event.

Where Is a Good Starting Point for Rebirth Aquaman?

The absolute best place to start reading Rebirth Mera comics is at the beginning. The entire Rebirth era is written by the same author, Dan Abnett, who tells a single storyline that stretches across the entire era. We highly recommend reading in this way for the best experience.

What is Mera's Rebirth Solo Series?

In the Rebirth era, Mera has a solo series, Mera: Queen of Atlantis (Review). This follows her adventures after the climactic events of Aquaman Vol. 5: The Crown Comes Down (Review) and before her return in the Aquaman comic's finale.

Can You Read Mera: Queen of Atlantis By Itself?

Wondering if Mera: Queen of Atlantis is a standalone comic? The answer is part yes and part no. The comic tells a singular adventure that starts and ends within the miniseries. However, it is intensely tied to everything else that is going on in the Aquaman series at the time. So, we highly recommend reading it alongside these other comics, rather than on its own.

Are Rebirth Mera Comics in a Separate Continuity?

No. The Rebirth era is simply a continuation of the New 52 continuity. This is particularly true for Mera, whose Rebirth narrative picks up right where the New 52 narrative left off.

Is Mera Part of the Justice League in Rebirth?

Yes, the Rebirth era puts Mera on the Justice League (Reading Order). This happens about halfway through the Rebirth era.
