Mr. Oz Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Mr. Oz throughout DC Comics.  It may not encompass every one of his appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

This reading order is different from most of ComicBookWire’s reading orders because it is designed to explore this character without fully revealing the secret behind his identity. As such, it excludes issues where Mr. Oz’s secret identity appears but Mr. Oz does not. Once readers have learned the identity of this character, they can go back to our main DC Comics reading orders page and seek out the full reading order for this character.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

With the start of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset and the history of nearly all of its characters was wiped clean. About halfway through this era, the mysterious Mr. Oz began appearing.

At first, Oz’s appearances are extremely small and have little impact on the main storyline. However, these appearances provide the setup for his much larger role in the Rebirth era.

Notes
  1. Mr. Oz's appearances here are even smaller than his already brief appearances across this story arc and, thus, can easily be skipped.

Rebirth

Mr. Oz's role in the Rebirth era immediately picks up where it left off in the New 52 era.

His appearances here start with DC Universe: Rebirth #1, which is the first comic to hint at his larger role in the DC Universe. Then, his story mostly progresses throughout the Action Comics series, where he becomes a large part of Superman's (Reading Order) life. Outside of this, Oz makes a few small appearances in other comics, however, these all relate back to his goal in the Action Comics series.

Notes
  1. In this story arc, Oz only makes small appearances that have little impact on the actual plotline. However, some of his comments hint at elements of his mysterious origin and his appearances here generally build the mystery surrounding him.
  2. These issues all feature very brief appearances from Mr. Oz. They show him manipulating events in the DC Universe in a way that relates back to his ultimate goal in the Action Comics series. These issues can be skipped but reading them gives a better appreciation for Oz's overall plan.
  3. This issue only features a brief appearance from Mr. Oz. However, it helps set pieces of the Superman: Reborn (Reading Order) event.
  4. Only Oz's voice appears in these issues. However, what he says has a minor impact on future issues.
  5. The events of this issue seem to take place before The Oz Effect storyline. However, this issue reveals a piece of information that works better when revealed as part of The Oz Effect so we recommend reading that storyline first.

Universe

The Universe era is essentially an extension of the Rebirth era. As such, for Mr. Oz, there are no continuity changes between these points in time.

Mr. Oz reappears in the Man of Steel series. His appearance in this comic builds on his appearances in the previous era and sets up his role through the rest of this era. Then, he takes on a central role in a story arc from the Superman series.
