Review: Justice League- Throne of Atlantis (Movie)

Quick Summary

Pros: The main narrative is captivating and stays exciting all the way through. The characters are all great and bring emotion and humor to the movie. The sense of progression in this new universe is fun to see.

Cons: Some of the movie’s subplots are lackluster.

Overall: This is another win for this Justice League movie series. This film is an exciting adventure with an endearing group of characters. It has good-looking action, some great emotions, and a nice level of humor every now and then. Not every aspect of the film is great but the positives heavily outweigh the negatives. Anyone who enjoyed the previous film or who is interested in seeing some more Aquaman should consider watching this movie.

Quick Review

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis essentially maintains the vast majority of the positives that were seen in Justice League: War (Review), the previous movie. This means that the narrative is interesting and fun to see develop. It means the animation looks great and lends itself well to the exciting fight scenes. And it means that the characters are all still charming and give the movie both humor and emotion.

Where Throne of Atlantis starts to define itself is in the way it progresses the development of the DC Animated Movie Universe. War introduced viewers to the Justice League and showed how the team began. Throne of Atlantis explains that their formation wasn’t perfect and that there are still plenty of problems to work out. Watching this happen adds something extra to the movie and gives the sense that this new movie universe is going to be something special. It also adds to the character development of the heroes, specifically Cyborg and Aquaman.

The only significant problem in Throne of Atlantis is that some of the subplots are rather poor. The Superman/Wonder Woman relationship feels rushed and, thus far, is not that appealing. Meanwhile, there are a few aspects of Aquaman’s story that feel forced rather than natural. None of these problems are huge though and the movie still has plenty of positive attributes to make up for its negative ones.

Continuity

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis continues the story from and takes place shortly after Justice League: War (Review).

The narrative from this film continues on in Justice League vs. Teen Titans.

Our upcoming article on references in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis will give a full explanation of how this movie fits into the DC Animated Movie Universe.
