Orion Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Orion throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. In this new continuity, Orion’s history seems to have been almost entirely wiped clean. This specifically removes his past interactions with Earth’s heroes, making it so he has never met them before. The one point that clearly remains from his pre-New 52 history is his status as the son of Darkseid (Reading Order) and the adopted son of Highfather (Reading Order), as the trade between Orion and Scott Free is still in continuity.

Orion is reintroduced through the Wonder Woman (Reading Order) series. There, he becomes a regular supporting character, helping Wonder Woman deal with the gods of Olympus. After this, Orion appears as one of many New Gods in the Green Lantern/New Gods: Godhead (Reading Order) crossover event. Here, he establishes a relationship with the Green Lantern Corps that becomes relevant in future comics.

Notes
  1. Orion's appearance in this issue is very small and only serves as a quick point of transition between his other appearances in the Godhead (Reading Order) event.
  2. A small portion of this issue shows a flashback to when Orion and Mister Miracle were originally swapped by the forces of Apokolips and New Genesis. However, this flashback is very brief and constitutes Orion's only appearance in this issue.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era does not create any specific continuity changes for Orion. However, Orion's storyline in the Rebirth era stands pretty independently from his storyline in the New 52 era. Some vague references are made to Orion's previous encounters with the Green Lantern Corps, specifically from the Godhead (Reading Order) event, but these are not necessary to understand his position at this point in time.

Orion's primary role in this era is in the Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps series. In this comic, he plays a supporting role that develops across two storylines. In general, these issues build on his relationship with the Green Lantern Corps and with his father, Highfather (Reading Order).

Universe

The Universe era is essentially an extension of the Rebirth era, as it maintains the same continuity. However, once again, Orion's storyline in this era is mostly independent from his storyline in the previous era. His initial appearance slightly builds on his relationship with the Green Lantern Corps but understanding this is not necessary to understanding his overall narrative in this era.

Orion's appearances across this era are pretty straightforward. First, he appears alongside several other New Gods in a climactic issue of the Justice League series. This then sets up his role in the second half of the Justice League Odyssey (Reading Order) series. His appearances across the Justice League Odyssey series have him in a starring role that generally explores the current status of both the New Gods and Darkseid (Reading Order).
