Highfather Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Highfather (Izaya) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances but is an outline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. In this new continuity, Highfather’s history seems to have been almost entirely wiped clean. This specifically removes his past interactions with Earth’s heroes, making it so he has never met them before. However, elements of Jack Kirby’s run on the Fourth World, like Highfather’s leadership of New Genesis, his role in the trade between Orion (Reading Order) and Scott Free, and the ongoing antagonism between New Genesis and Apokolips, remain in continuity.

Highfather is initially introduced through a few very brief appearances in the Wonder Woman (Reading Order) and Superman (Reading Order) comics. After these, his role in the DC Universe becomes more prominent. Readers learn about his backstory in a special Justice League issue and then he takes on a starring role in the Green Lantern/New Gods: Godhead (Reading Order) event. From here, his appearances become less significant but still explain some intriguing elements about his past and his relationship to the nature of the DC Universe.

Notes
  1. Highfather's appearances in these comics are very brief and essentially serve as a way to initiate a storyline centered around Orion (Reading Order).
  2. These issues only feature a brief cameo from Highfather that helps prelude his presence in future issues. Wonder Woman #21 sets up Wonder Woman #22 while Green Lantern #34 sets up the Godhead (Reading Order) event.
  3. Highfather's presence in this issue is brief but helps serve as a narrative transition between his other appearances in this event.
  4. Highfather does not actually appear in this issue. However, the issue gives the reader information about something Highfather did in the past, further developing his character.
  5. This issue only features a very brief appearance from Highfather. However, this appearance is critical in establishing the complex situation revolving around the death and rebirth of the New Gods. We'll be explaining this situation in a future article.
  6. This issue features a short flashback to the trade between Orion (Reading Order) and Scott Free. It may be interesting to readers interested in this specific moment in time.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era does not create any specific continuity changes for Highfather. However, Highfather's storyline in the Rebirth era stands pretty independently from his storyline in the New 52 era. Some references are made to Highfather's previous encounters with the Green Lantern Corps, specifically from the Godhead (Reading Order) event, but these are not necessary to understand his position at this point in time.

Highfather's only significant role in this era is in the Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps series. In this comic, he appears in a single story arc alongside a few other New Gods.

Notes
  1. This issue continues the ongoing story regarding the relationship between the between the New Gods and the Green Lantern Corps. However, Highfather's appearance here is very brief and mostly just serves as a way to bring Orion (Reading Order) in the story arc.
Other Appearances
  • Mister Miracle
    • Highfather appears in Mister Miracle #1. This issue does not prominently feature Highfather but does provide some interesting thoughts on his relationship with Mister Miracle. However, the entire comic does not seem to take place within the mainstream DC Universe.

Universe

The Universe era is essentially an extension of the Rebirth era, as it maintains the same continuity. Despite this, Highfather's presence here does not reference anything he did in previous eras.

Highfather only makes a few brief appearances in this era and all of them relate to the ongoing narrative stretching across Scott Snyder's Justice League series (Reading Order). In this comic, he occasionally appears as one of several cosmically important entities helping the Justice League (Reading Order) with an ongoing crisis.
