What to Read Before Aquaman Vol. 1: Unspoken Water

Aquaman Vol. 1: Unspoken Water, from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Robson Rocha, takes place sometime shortly after the events of Aquaman/Suicide Squad: Sink Atlantis (Reading Order). It initially seemed as if the conclusion of Sink Atlantis directly led to the change in the status quo seen in Unspoken Water. However, without saying too much, the next volume reveals that this isn’t exactly true. So, you can read Sink Atlantis before reading this but you don’t have to.

Instead, we’d suggest simply being familiar with Aquaman’s recent history before this point. The full Aquaman Rebirth run (Reading Order) helps explain the events that are currently taking place in Aquaman’s life and in Atlantis as a whole. These aren’t so important in Unspoken Water but become more important in the future volumes of this series. If you can’t read the entire Rebirth era storyline, start with Aquaman Vol. 3: Crown of Atlantis and follow the series to Aquaman Vol. 6: Kingslayer.

What to Read After Aquaman Vol. 1: Unspoken Water

The story in Aquaman Vol. 1: Unspoken Water directly continues in Aquaman Vol. 2: Amnesty (Continuity). You should read these comics in order if you’re looking for the full storyline.

References in Aquaman Vol. 1: Unspoken Water

Aquaman Vol. 1: Unspoken Water is almost entirely standalone and really have any significant references to other comics. The closest reference is to Mera’s current standing in Atlantis, which is explained by her Rebirth era actions. Specifically, it is explained by the events that take place between Aquaman Vol. 3: Crown of Atlantis and follow the series to Aquaman Vol. 6: Kingslayer.
