Cyborg Reading Order

This reading order is designed to give an outline of major storylines featuring Cyborg (Victor Stone) throughout DC Comics. It may not encompass every one of his appearances, but is a timeline of the major ones and the stories that affect them.

The continuity details relating to each specific storyline are explained in the “Review” of each storyline. Every “Review” link will provide a detailed continuity breakdown of that story and will explain any reference the story makes to other aspects of the DC Universe. All of this can be found under the “Continuity” section of each link.

New 52

At the beginning of the New 52, the DC Universe was reset. In this new continuity, Cyborg’s history was wiped completely clean. Over the course of this era, his origin and overall progression was then rewritten.

The majority of Cyborg’s appearances, in this era, are in the Justice League (Reading Order) series. This comic introduces Cyborg, defines his new origin story, and depicts the majority of his adventures. Outside of this series, Cyborg also stars in his own solo series. The Cyborg comic explores Cyborg in a more individual way and expands on his relationships with his friends and family.

Notes
  1. Cyborg does not make an appearance in the Forever Evil (Reading Order) event. However, his adventures during Justice League #26-29 take place at the exact same time as Forever Evil. Thus, reading this event will help give more background to what Cyborg is doing at this time.
  2. Cyborg gains a new ability in Cyborg Vol. 1: Unplugged (Review) which is referenced in Justice League Vol. 7: Darkseid War Part 1 (Review) (Reading Order). Then, in Cyborg Vol. 2: Enemy of the State (Review), Cyborg officially tells the League about his new ability. This is the only reason we have separated these two Cyborg volumes.

Rebirth

The transition from the New 52 to the Rebirth era appears to have very little impact on Cyborg's history. It essentially preserves the continuity that was present in the New 52. However, toward the end of this era, it is clear that at least some aspects of Cyborg's pre-New 52 history are returning, as Cyborg has a connection to Raven (Reading Order).

In the Rebirth era, Cyborg's major appearances are in his solo series and alongside the Justice League (Reading Order). Cyborg's solo series emphasizes his unique connection to cybernetics and builds on his personal relationships while his appearances alongside the Justice League emphasize the role he has within their group. Cyborg also plays a major part in a story arc running through the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event. This directly leads to Cyborg's role in the Justice League: No Justice (Reading Order) event, which directly sets up his status quo for the next era.

Notes
  1. Cyborg is a member of the Justice League (Reading Order) in this era. In most of the League's appearances he serves in a supporting role or plays a contributing part in a larger group effort, which does not contribute much to his story. For these appearances, this reading order links ComicBookWire's "Justice League Reading Order" to prevent this reading order from becoming overly complicated. Larger or more significant appearances are listed separately and explained where indicated.
  2. Cyborg only makes relatively brief appearances in these issues from the Dark Nights: Metal (Reading Order) event. However, these appearances help give a larger picture of his full role in the event.

Universe

The Universe era is essentially an extension of the Rebirth era, as it maintains the same continuity. Because of this, Cyborg does not experience any significant continuity alterations between these two eras. Instead, his narrative picks up where it left off in the previous era, with the Justice League Odyssey (Reading Order) series building on his appearances in Justice League: No Justice (Reading Order).

Cyborg starts this era with a few appearances alongside the Justice League (Reading Order). However, he soon distances himself from that team and becomes a founding member of the Justice League Odyssey team-up. His cosmic adventure with this team has Cyborg as a central character and a key part of how the plot progresses. The conclusion of the Justice League Odyssey series then directly leads to Cyborg's role in the Dark Nights: Death Metal (Reading Order) series.

Notes
  1. Cyborg appears alongside the other members of the Justice League (Reading Order) across these issues. However, compared to other members of the team, he plays a relatively small role. His adventures here also have very little impact on his overall progression especially since, shortly after these issues, he joins up with the Justice League Odyssey (Reading Order).
  2. Cyborg makes brief appearances across these issues. They do not feature much from Cyborg but help set up his appearances in future issues.
  3. These issues only feature brief appearances from Cyborg. They simply show that he plays a part in the Dark Nights: Death Metal (Reading Order) event outside his appearances in the Justice League issues.
  4. This issue contains an extremely brief appearance from several heroes, including Cyborg. This appearance is not essential but hints at the role they will play in the next era.
